An April 2021, article by Chinese Labor Watch called “Urge Apple to comply with Chinese labor laws and ensure all its products are free from forced labor!” claimed that Apple did not follow Chinese labour laws in the country. The article alleged that while Apple was happy to follow the state’s censorship laws relating to banned apps, games and social media content, the company has disregarded labour laws by ignoring suppliers violating a cap on the maximum proportion of temporary dispatch workers at 10%. Dispatch workers work on temporary and insecure contracts, often at low rates. The article alleged that an internal Apple presentation revealed that temporary dispatch workers constitute over 50% of the workforce at over 80 Apple factories, mostly hired to reduce production costs.
Apple lost half a mark under workers' rights category for this secondary criticism.
