Story

On 4th January 2022, Ethical Consumer reviewed a January 2018 article on chinalaborwatch.org called 'Apple’s Failed CSR Audit: A Report on Catcher Technology Polluting the Environment and Harming the Health of Workers'. The article discussed conditions at a factory operated by Catcher Technology (Suqian) Co Ltd. for manufacturing Apple products.

The article alleged that alongside general complaints of lack of safety training, long work hours, and low wages, the factory's conditions included:
Workers coming into contact with toxic substances, and factory does not specify what the chemicals are and the potential hazards
Severe pollution at the factory. The report's investigator worked at the factory for four weeks before having to leave due to respiratory issues
Excessive amount of loud noise, which can cause irreversible damage to workers’ hearing
Difficulty of resignation. Workers sent by the dispatch company who apply for resignation are rebuked by management and agencies hiring in staff will usually not agree to a worker’s request to resign.

As a result, Apple Inc. lost a whole mark in the workers' rights category.
