Story

In August 2018, Ethical Consumer searched the websites of the two initiatives set up to improve health and safety in Bangladeshi garment factories following the tragic Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013:

a) The Accord on Fire & Building Safety in Bangladesh ('the Accord'): bangladeshaccord.org/signatories/

b) The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety (the 'Alliance'): www.bangladeshworkersafety.org/about/members

The Accord was widely considered by campaigners to be the better of the two initiatives, as it was legally-binding and required members to continue sourcing from Bangladesh for five years. The Accord also involved worker representatives in its application, whereas the Alliance did not.

Amazon was not listed as a member of either initiative at the time of writing.
